Ellensiu's adventures

Post » 20 Sep 2015 07:57

Based on a quick idea during a chat in-game, I'll narrate my adventures with these posts. I'm thinking a mixture of in-character and out-of-character comments, mostly because some of my fun arises from playing the game apart from living in the world.

My name is Ellensiu, I'm a Sylvari and I have no idea about the world I woke up to.

The great joy of starting an RPG without any prior knowledge of the lore or mechanics comes when you can choose whatever "looks good". I picked Sylvari because of their portrayal of a nature-loving race, which is thankfully avoiding any of the shroom-induced "feels good, man" stereotypes.
My oblivious and naive joy in experiencing the world is also reflected in such small details, like the idle animations, when she sways her arms like a child would.

(Also, Sylvari fit great for a backstory due to my lack of lore knowledge - I had a dream, *pop*, I suddenly find myself running, following orders from some other ghostly Sylvari)

Image
This picture shows me on the left - aptly disguised with Nightmare Court clothing, while I confront one of their chiefs.

I'd expect some people who call themselves "Nightmare Court" ponder a moment on whether "they are the baddies"

This picture was taken short time after I found out what the "Compact all" button does to the inventory. Who would have thought, pouring the contents of all bags into the bigger one leaves a mess...
Though, I thankfully received a nice message from a guild member, containing a bag with what must be sticky glue on its sides - its contents wont fall out so easy.
(If the sender would be so kind and stand up - I'm still trying to get hold of several levels of names)

So far I liked the Caledon Forest with all its flora and fauna. I fondly remember an exchange of two Sylvari, with one explaining what they'd have for dinner "crab this, crab that, and some crab on the side". And the other replies "We're in dire need of a chef" :)

I find the Skrit adorable! Especially if they tell me I smell... different. Good thing I live by the mantra "Every life has a right to live" - because often a small rat was looking at me funny (registered as a target with TAB) and I always spared them. No idea what would happen if I stomped on one of them in Skritsburg.

Speaking of targeting enemies - So far I have a love-hate relationship how missile-based attacks work; A fireball en-route to a person that just fell down doesn't simply evaporate. No, it continues to fly past the corpse - as it should! Though, more often than not, right behind is another foe. They get annoyed by having their nice armor charred and charge me, while I'm barely recovering from the previous fight...

This compresses my first 20 levels in this game - if time and muse permits, I'll try to post updates more often. So you can enjoy reliving this game for the first time :)

[edit]I'm still trying to figure out how to properly embed a screenshot from Google drive...[/edit]

aww great you did it. I loved reading it!
the ingame messages are sadly one of anet's strokes of ingenuity where they decided to just display the character name who sent the message and not the account name. As if everyone would know every character name of each player they know by heart. -.-
Images work with the image tag [*img]Link[*/img] (without the asterisks). Though this works only if you can actually link directly to the images, e.g. with picasa this doesn't really work, so totally possible google drive has similar issues. Or you have to get a public link to the pic from google drive first as is the case for dropbox.

The cool thing of being able to play while the patch is downloading is... well, playing while the patch is still downloading. Unless you want to enter an area that is being patched. Instead of seeing caterpillars and forklifts buzzing around, you have to wait until its safe to enter. (beware of that forklift link to youtube: a bit slow but becomes morbid with dark humor)

So I started my evening by looking at some extra dialog that keeped nagging for attention: the Hero dialog and all the hero points I had collected so far (from drinking dubious beer at the roadside to waking up sleeping ghosts and beating them into submission again...). I was told that "you'll buy all of those skills anyway" and still went to pick and choose what I wanted to have first (didn't have enough of these points yet).
I went for more fire & power stuff (since there's no 'tanking' concept, I can go crazy with dps - right?) and some healing stuff. Because if I don't have any effect with damage, I can at least try to heal others (and cause more aggro :P ).

Buying these extra skills caused another dialog to call for attention. Specialization and stuff. No idea what this does, I had a flashback of pipe mania and clicked a few more buttons. Around that time my area of interest was ready for entering.

At this point it's worth noting that the following contains some spoilers regarding Sylvari background. So, if you are like me and want to experience everything firsthand first, avoid this post until you did your character quests of level 20.

Here's a picture of me and my BFF Caithe (on the right):
Image
We look like we were going out on an evening. Though, with the dress of Caithe it looks more like we were heading for an underground techno party...
Either way, we were out with this "Harbinger" guy, who, to me suspiciously, still kept the disguises for the Nightmare Court. The first time around it was him and me who changed clothes, I wonder where he pulled that extra set for Caithe...

In the end we had to convince a few more of the Nightmare Court to... stop dreaming. And, more interestingly, we found out that there might be at least one other tree!

Between all that I got hold of a new armor piece, which oddly enough provides more protection than my previous closed top - while at the same time being incredibly small:
Image
Seems like Sylvari are highly vulnerable at their shoulders. (Or it might just be the female armor trope)
If you can't explain it: It's magic :)

I don't mind that much - I'm more at home in the water anyway, where too much clothing is cumbersome.

Quite some time passed, which I used to practice my tailoring skills. I now have several refined rags and a cute tailoring bag. I have no idea what this is for, but I can show it off!
I also realized I have a huge arsenal of colours available that I can apply freely on my armor. So, instead of this brownish mess you can see above, I'm now blue!

Image
Don't click this link - You won't get it out of your head for two days.

Caithe wouldn't send me new messages to hit town, so I continued my own journey through the Brisban Wildlands. I came across one of these little fellows who told me nearby bandits joined forces with some other group named "The Inquest" as well as the Nightmare Court.

Joining up with with the Nightmare Court is never good for me, so I crashed into one lab of these Inquest people. I have no idea what they are doing, but it's sure enough weird to look at.

Image
Wise people will note that it's the same stuff that allows us also to teleport across the land - to which I say: Well, the Nightmare Court don't use that, so it's fine.

I then came across a hold-up of aforementioned bandits, who were easy to persuade otherwise (after the second attempt - Personal note: try to find an armor repairer some time soon...).
This hold-up was at a passageway to "The Gallowfields". This area looks dire and I miss the woods... But there are Skrit!
Image

That area is home to more bandits - which even raid the Skrit! I was asked to infiltrate one of their bases (of the bandits, mind you) and mess up with their plans. There were a few weird things with that action: In their camp, they had their plans strewn around all over the place. Either they have strong winds that blow their papers all over the place, or it's corporate procedure to hand out memos to all bandits.

Though, the weirdest thing about this action was my disguise!
Image
Being pink is... strange! I was happy to be out of there again.

awesome :) Talking of colour, you should check out the guild bank. There are stacks of dies in there (top area) that other members don't need. You can take the colours you don't have yourself from there and add them to your collection.

Continuing my journey through the Brisban Wildlands, I came across another race of friendly creatures.
They are rather big and seem to pack a lot, though, they don't talk much. However, they do bring along other, also sturdy, friends that do the talking for them.
Image

They were close to a bastion of these Inquest people. I just came by to look at their house and still they didn't like me. This could be sorted out rather quickly. In one of their labs, I encountered a "strange force", with which I could "commune". People considered this to be a challenge, yet it came down to charge up.

Image

Going further I found a camp with little people of the friendly kind. They had issues with their experiments and needed me to help them out with their research. Kind of a physical research if you ask me.

Image
Working in a coal mine, going down...(Also, I believe I'm holding this tool thingie wrong)

It turned out that the main researcher was gone so I couldn't sell the precious ore. Oh well.

Next, I helped a lost woodland spirit get back to its home - A rather easy escorting detour. I finally ended up in the "Koga Ruins", some eerie place which is home for a running spirit. I made my camp here for now to figure out whether this corner gets some proper daylight anytime soon...

There weren't many unexplored places left in the Brisban Wildlands. I found another, otherwise beautiful, place with stuff from the little people. I've also learnt that the pink people call the little ones the "Asura".

Image

They do... stuff... around here - I forgot already what it was. I was asked to go around and press buttons. Oookay - that sounds easy enough.

Image
"You want me to press this button? While you stand way over there?... uhh..."

This was quite energetic. I then ventured to a connected area in which "strange things" happen; Another Asura was talking about a failed experiment or something and now random creatures would pop in and out of existence. Mental note: From now on, when I come across Asura, I'll assume strange things happening from the get go.

Either way, that area was curious. In the midst of the jungle I saw polar bears, fire imps and some crazy shadow thingies - even a giant! All of them were in a state of mixed daze and frenzy, so staying for a long time wasn't good.

Finally I fought with the help of others through a valley which was infested with crazy thorn roots and similar creatures. In the end we cleared the valley and I could reach the last pocket of the Wildlands.
I have a feeling that these infestations are not a local thing.

I found my way into "Metrica Province". And sure enough, the weird things kept coming with these Asura.
Close to a huge building I came across an Asura named "Rooba", who identified the place to be their "Thaumanova Reactor".

Image

She told me that this reactor thingie "went critical" some time ago. And this is bad. So I helped a few of their scientists inside get back on their feet. Along the way I also had to fend off some creatures that were sucked in by the unleashed chaos magic.

Further out they had some pillars which needed a kick to their base. I have no idea what they do, other than going "hummm" afterwards. This makes the Asura happy.

Image
It also gives a nice light show.

Nothing special happened after I lit all of them. At least I'm in the jungle again.

(I have to admit, picking and arranging screenshots is fun :) )

easy to tell you enjoy the screenshots. They really enrich the story. I can totally relate to that, I love making screenshots whenever I see something nice (same as I love taking pics irl :D)
